soft eggs, again?!
« on: August 29, 2011, 20:35 »
Hello, i wonder if anyone can help, again?
My little Agie has laid soft shell and no shell eggs before but after the advise i received to my pervious postings on here she has been laying normal for a couple of weeks.
However tonight she was still out on the outside perch in darkness and when i went to shut them up at 8.20 there was an egg in the run.
when i shone the torch i thought it had broken as i could see white so i got the rake and got it out. But when i picked it up it was in one piece. shining the torch back into the run i could still see the white.
could she have laid a normal egg and just the white of a second?
Is this going to be a constant re-occurring problem or is there a cure?
Thank you.

if it happens for a while i recommend trying ground up oysters. try getting them at your regular feed store

Unfortunately some hens are prone to egg laying problems, especially the hybrids.

If your other hens are not having problems, then you can almost entirely rule out a dietary problem.

If you want to supplement the one hen, I believe people have had good experiences with "Shell Max" as I believe you can treat one hen individually with this. (If you add extra calcium to the feed, the other hens would get an "overdose" of calcium, which can be harmful).

One of my hybrid girls had a couple of days of softies a few weeks ago - she laid 2 each time - and one day, I think they might have eaten the contents of one of them, as I only found a trace of gloopy white, but a few days later, I uncovered the 'shell' membrane in the run - it had been raked through with their digging so I hadnt noticed it. She was laying 2 softies instead of the huge double yoker she had sometimes laid. Both days she did it, she did it evening / nighttime, not normal egg laying time.

Thank you for all the answers. Aggie is back to normal again so i think she's always going to have this problem! She is the smallest of my 3 hens , who i got together.
