Spinach can be sown now??
« on: August 20, 2011, 07:06 »
I have it on my chart that you can sow spinach now (August / September) and you can sow directly outdoors.  I have some seeds dried already from some I planted that went to seed a few wees ago and they're either Scenic or Leaf Beet Perpetual Spinach.  The trouble is, I don't now which they are as I tried both and didn't label them properly.  Does anyone think it's worth me just trying them anyway?  I could try some indoors in a tray and some directly outdoors I suppose??

They take about 4 to 6 weeks to be ready for harvest, so I'd give it a try.  :)

As beet spinach is slow to set seed i expect it is Scenic . Give it a try but put plenty in so that you can eat them as 'baby leaf' if they do not want to grow big.

In that case I'm going to give it a whirl!!  You're supposed to be able to sow White Lisbon spring onion and French Breakfast 3 radish this month and next as well.  Also, this month, turnips can still be sown.

I'm guessing probably somewhere else.  8doubles, does it grow over winter then if I start it now?

The beet spinach (leaf beet, silver beet) 8D mentioned is much the same crop as chard and as such it will over-winter.

I only planted the seedlings last week and they're doing brilliantly, I can't believe it.  If they carry on at this rate, I'll be potting them on by next weekend or the weekend after and leaving half in my back garden in the little plastic greenhouse, and putting the other half outside to see how they cope with the cooler weather.

Right now I feel quite chuffed.  How many times can you re-use seeds from what you've previously grown, is it possible to go on forever doing it and never having to buy spinach again?

I'm so excited I feel Popeye-tastic!!
