Hen not quite right...
« on: August 28, 2011, 16:40 »
Afternoon,

One of my sussex is looking rather off her game today.  Im prety sure she laid this morning, but she has spent most of the day (getting worse as we go) all fluffed up and sitting down.  She has been eating when offered a bit of corn but she just dosnt seem right.

Her come etc is still bright red so im just not sure what could be wrong with her.  I checked her vent and no sigh of shell etc...

She is only about 30 weeks, been laying for 2 weeks orso. Been wormed etc...
I hate signatures but love irony

she may be getting ready to lay a softee - if that is the case she will be fine after she has got it out of her system.
Staffies are softer than you think.

I have had 2 chickens now (Maran & Light Sussex) who previously displayed the same symptons you described - both later on passed soft/shellless eggs and were then back to their normal 'chicken' selves afterwards.

Our chooks all took a little while to settle into the laying lark and even now they will still have an off or rest day, either laying softees or none at all for a couple of days, before getting back into it.

Well, she is back normal now, after laying 4 soft eggs in 2 days!

She then laid a normal egg and seems happy as larry!

With all those eggs on the go at once no wonder she was looking sorry for herself!
