 Definately, not only do you get to choose your variety, but garlic does store realtively well, again dependent on variety.  I've grown it in pots very easily using a mix of compost, horticultural grit and rotted manure with no bother. 

Only one year did I have a failure of crops due to very wet weather and because I bought a packet from a garden centre, which did not survive very well.

I always get mine from the http://www.thegarlicfarm.co.uk/, Solent Wight, pretty much every year 95-100% germination.

nice stock form the garlic farm, but their prices plus P&P are frightening, unless you can share costs with a friend

In answer to an earlier post I get my garlic from the Isle of Wight garlic farm but they sell to the garden catalogue folks such as Fothergills, Kings, Dobies etc etc

I couldn't just grow one variety of garlic every year, it would do my head in    I like to grow different ones so that I've sampled them all.  I pulled up Chesnok the other day which had been growing in a builders rubble sack and hardly ever watered since I planted them last January. They're good quality, fat cloves so I'm well pleased
