keeping plants over the weekend
« on: August 11, 2011, 10:44 »
i ordered some cabbages, kale and chicory, forgetting i was going to be away over the weekend. they are going to arrive while i'm away.

husband is going to be around, and won't plant them for me but can probably be persuaded to look after them until i get back - 3 or 4 days.

i've ordered from the company before and last time they came wrapped in newspaper. will they be OK for three days if husband keeps them damp? is there any other way of looking after them?

I would have thought they'd be OK somewhere cool and dark. If he isn't completely useless, could he put them all in a seed tray and cover the roots with some damp compost? Again keep them outside somewhere cool.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I would leave the roots in their packaging and damp but make sure that the leaves are exposed to the light and keep them cool in the shade.

and if possible keep them upright, otherwise they will start to grow bent over toward the light -- amazingly quickly  :D

I also was unable to plant out some brassicas that I had ordered, I put them in a seed tray and covered the roots with multipurpose compost. I kept them in one of those plastic growhouses with no cover on, the trouble I had was the cabbage with butterflies got in there and laid their eggs all over the leaves, so if you do store them outside check the leaves very carefully, they are very clever at disguising them.
