Blasted Badger
« on: August 06, 2011, 10:32 »
Last week I was so pleased that 1 crop, my lovely asparagus was actually performing well and hadn't turned up its toes and died. Last night the blasted badger turned the bed (up to 8 inches down) into the surface of the moon  >:(  roots and spears everywhere but I think the crowns themselves are ok.  >:(  >:(  >:(

The rest of the sickly beds, all 5 of them were untouched. I am not happy.

Directions for Badger proofing an 8'x3'x12" bed gratefully received.

The bit I like about badgers is when they dig a hole and poop in it. Quite disgusting!

Lardman,Its always worth trying the old dodge of tying some pieces of rag to vertical sticks you have pushed into the ground then soak the rags in creosote, refresh regularly to keep the rags moist.
The unknown quantity of this is,does this modern user and enviorment friendly creosote have the same pungent aroma as the old stuff that foxes and badgers could'nt abide.
There is also a animal detterant called Renadine,I have used it with great success to keep foxes away in the past,we used to buy it from the local agricultural merchants but I guess it ought be available on line.
Best of luck,no one ought be deprived of their asparagus next spring.

I've wrapped them up in cotton wool netting for tonight and turned the PIR water soaker thing back on.

The old bloke next door mentioned they didn't like the smell of wood preserve last year, but the problem went away after I put a gate up. I'll have to retreat the beds with preserve if it comes back.   >:(

The back garden is starting to look like Maginot line  :(

All safe this morning  :D

I think I'll have to take a serious look at pest proofing the veg area at the end of the season.

Creosote and Renardine have been banned for some years now.

You can buy a replacement for creosote from DIY places such as Wickes (I think it's called Creocote), it has the same smell but doesn't contain the nasties of the old stuff. It might work as a deterrent.

Advice here about deterring foxes suggest using Scoot, Stayoff etc.
