The swimming chicken
« on: July 22, 2011, 20:09 »
We got a Welsummer chicken about four weeks ago - she was raised with ducks so she is very attached to our ducks. She has watched the ducks go for a swim in their pool but never ventured near it (nor do any of the other hens). But today when OH and I were in the run she took a flying leap into the pool - then seemed to realise that she was not a duck, flapped about and scrambled out again. She then wandered off - fluffing out her feathers and trying to look as if she had not done anything so undignified. She has stayed well away from it since then. Wish I had a camera with me when it happened.  :) :)

Many years ago my very small daughter had the bright idea of putting her pet silkie in the paddling pool!  I rushed across the garden full of righteous indignation to rescue the poor thing, but actually Blackie  managed to paddle to the side on her own and didn't seem to bothered by the incident!

I was working in the shed yesterday and heard a lot of noise outside and thought the hens were up to no good , the hens were lined up watching about 20 sparrows and a blackbird on the pond netting .
Looked like a busy day at the Lido, mind you it was hot and a dust bath was obviously not good enough.  :)
