it also covers domestic kitchens. I never feed my birds kitchen scraps anyway  :).

As for being vegetarian the law also covers cooking oil - which I'm sure most vegetarians use sunflower, vegetable and olive oils  ;)

Mine are not kitchen scrape but cooked veg straight from the garden

if the veg goes into your kitchen at any time then technically they are illegal.

no they are prepared and cooked in my Garage

Now I do find that rather silly, just another case of authority using  blanket coverage of a problem

rather like using a sledge hammer to crack a nut.

Well at least I am not alone in feeding kitchen-based treats to my chooks, and I found an old thread I commented on about 'what can I feed my chickens' (http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=63520.0) and there's lots of home-based goodies mentioned in that...was starting to feel like the one nobody had told about the party!

However, now I know I will give the kitchen scraps to my worms and stick to allotment 'waste' for the chooks! *sigh*  Won't miss boiling up the spud peelings though!

I never did that :) Mine is a fussy eater only the best for her like cheese, meal worms,
fresh spinach and certain types of lettuce she will eat layer pellets if a damp them first.

Like I say rather spoilt but then she is the last out of four.

Surely it's only a problem if you sell your eggs?

I can't imagine DEFRA combing the countryside listening out for garden poultry to check you're not giving them kitchen scraps!

Though mine don't have scraps, they'd rather it was fresh and just for them thank you very much!!! Husband says they are well spoilt. Especially when I let Bernadette dust bathe amongst his cabbages today as she's finally laid her first proper egg in 8 weeks :)

She looked so happy  :D

It's a stupid law and I don't follow stupid laws.

My girls have scraps and fresh food FROM MY KITCHEN.  Come on DEFRA prosecute me....

If you have the time to prosecute back yard chicken owners for that then you have way to much time on your hands and are therefor receiving far to much funding.

What you do in your own back yard is entirely up to you.  But I would remind you that this site cannot and will not condone illegal activities.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I wonder if any backyard chicken keeper has been found guilty of feeding "mash" to their birds and what punishment has been handed down

ok i know this sounds like a stupid question but...what if your back door is through your kitchen?

wait.....i'm asking with a 'for instance'

my neighbour gives me surplus cauliflower from the allotment. leaves it at my front door. i come home from work and take it through the house to the garden.

if i take the bags through the kitchen and put the bags on the counter/floor to unlock door - then give it to the birds then technically its been in my kitchen...now what?

This is beginning to get a bit silly.
The Law as it stands has been stated..............what you do in your own homes is up to you.

The Forum is not really the right place to discuss illegal activity.....eg. how to get round the rules, or how you will ignore them, is it :nowink:

But that's just it, this forum and plenty of other UK sites freely discuss what 'treats' to feed your chickens (pasta and potato peelings being a firm favourite) with no mention of it being "illegal activity".

So I posted originally because I thought many people would be as surprised as I was to find that something so commonly discussed and presumed 'normal' is, in fact, illegal.

This law is clearly aimed at not using 'catering waste' but unfortunately they have included domestic kitchens in the scope, which seems bizarre.

the law is there so that all food can be sourced back to it's origins just in case there is any infections/outbreaks of illness, disease etc. It can then be accounted for. This applies not just to meat, fish, eggs etc but also seeds (in the news recently with beansprouts).
This particular topic has been discussed previously and like then it was pointed out that no kitchen scraps should be given.
Thank you webwham for bringing it to the attention of those who may not have known about it and yes it was a valid point to make however I am now going to lock this post as some comments to seem to be now about how to bend the law which is something this forum cannot condone.
Staffies are softer than you think.
