Hi Folks help need my swedes are about 6/8 dia have picked 2 both split and a bit woody.We do have club root on the allotment. The swedes are best of all, i watered them when it was dry.Hope this is enough information for you Thanks for any replies  :)

Club root will certainly be a problem for swede.

When did you sow them?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

That's really too early and probably the problem, they're not happy with being too cold.

I'll lay odds that the packet said to sow in May/June.

It might be because it was warm and dry, followed by a lot of rain and cooler temperatures. A wet spell can cause a growth spurt which will make the roots split.

I've found that watering isn't as good as rain, it might be that tap water is too cold and the plants don't appreciate the various additives.
