Do Brahma chicks feather up differently?
« on: July 17, 2011, 09:12 »
I have 4 Gold brahma chicks at 3 weeks old. One chick has very different wings to the others and I have been wondering if it is a difference between the sexes or a deformity.

have a word with Kellogs - he breeds Brahmas so may be able to help - a photo would help  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

Hi, a little young but boys are a lot slower to feather up than pullets so when you say deformity, do you mean their shoulder joints are more prominent. It is probable because the little one is a boy and hasn't got any wing feathers to cover them. Not that they have many feathers at this age . Has the others got more feathering on shoulder  blades, showing,  ? Could do with pics ...............................but  look forward to seeing pics when you can but honestly some of my young boys look tall, skinny and bare till they fill out...........and do they fill out ;)

and just so you know I'm not a he  ::) :)

Kelloggs - thanks for the detailed posting - it would now appear that I too have a little boy in my Gold Brahmas!

The chick has more feathers than the others (only just), it has larger feathers on the wings and they sit further away from the body. I think these feathers could be flight feathers? but as this is my first hatch I am unsure. I am on the verge of thinking that this chick could be a girl but time will tell.
I will see if I can get a clear-ish pic on my phone.
