Is it best to leave Autumn King carrots in the ground during autumn / winter or is it best to lift and store them?

I always leave them in.

One or two tops may get nibbled and they may be difficult to extract if the ground is frozen solid, but that's it.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
