Advise on digging out fruit bushes please
« on: July 17, 2011, 09:11 »
I took on half a plot in the spring. I'm just starting to make layout changes and plans for how to use the space.

First job is to remove the 5 blackcurrant bushes that are a jungle of bindweed and maretail. Any tips? Would you chop them off at base then dig out or dig round and try to pull them out using the top for leverage? First time ever tried something like this! Usually so pleased that something is growing that I'll leave it whether I like it or not! I have untangled 3 long bindweed plants and have them soaking in bottles of glyphosate - will be leaving those for another few days.

I take it that these are quite old, established bushes, if so they don't take too well to being moved. If this is being attempted, it's best done October onwards, when they go into dormancy.

With older plants, it's best to take as much soil as possible with the roots. Problem. You'll be taking bindweed and mare's tail roots with you.

If you really want to move them, I'd be tempted to start with new plants, propagating them by either "layering" or cuttings, and forget about the older ones.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks DD, Yes they're old huge bushes. The gentleman who used to have my half plot was really keen! He had 2 full plots for many years and my bit had all of the fruit on. It covers over a third of my space. I left everything for a season and we're going to keep most of the raspberries and gooseberries but no one was keen on blackcurrants so we're going to just take them out to make space for another bed. Feels harsh to take plants out that are thriving but really feeling the lack of space.
