Harvesting Hunter & Sunshine Squashes
« on: July 14, 2011, 10:24 »
I'm a begginer in gardening and I have been given squash seeds of the above variety. They have grown well but are changing from orange to green. The seed packets shows that they should be orange in colour. Do I harvest them now? I live in Brittany where the weather is similar to the West Country, if that helps?

They should be left on the plant until the foliage dies down in late Autumn, for the best flavour and sweetness.

Yes, they start off pale green/orange, then go slightly more green, then as the leaves die back and go dry the fruit gradually goes that pale orange colour. Best to leave them on the plant until they reach that stage, although you can remove them and ripen them on a sunny windowsill if frosts threaten.
