What to do with all my compost?
« on: July 10, 2011, 21:39 »
Hi Everyone...

OK, I went over the top this year with plenty of compost and potato bags for 'alot' of spuds in the back garden!

I thought I could use the same compost every year but obviously nowI know better :)

Im storing the used compost in each of the potato bags I have harvested but what can I do to it for next year to revitalise it?

Shall I mix some chicken manure in it, get rid of it, or keep half of it andmix some new compost in with it next year?

Ive no idea but I would to keep costs down :)

The compost from the pots bags can be spread on the area of your plot you used for potatoes this year and then dug in in the winter.   If you don't have an area which pots were grown ion then it can go on the rotation area for brassicas or the flower beds.    Just don't reuse it for pots or tomatoes as that may spread virus and disease.
Do you really need al that lettuce/

We emptied ours onto an area of the veg plot we haven't used this year but will next, the chickens did the rest ::)

Sorry missed your last post, what about reusing for brassicas in pots next?

Just had to look up brassicas :)

Oo cauliflower... so I can use it again next year for caulis? Oo that sounds good enough to me, excellent. I will do some more reasearch and definitely try that for next year.

It will need revitalising as you say.  I'd suggest slow-release general purpose fertiliser such as growmore or fish blood bone, added shortly before planting next year.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

You dont really need to wait till next year - as soon as my spuds come out of the pots on my path I chuck in some chicken manure pellets and an inch of bought compost to the top then sow salad stuff, rocket, kale, swiss chard, spinage etc. After this I do then tend to tip on my raised beds but you might be successful adding more nutrients and reusing. Try to avoid reusing for spuds again though.

I did exactly the same thing, I have 9 bin bags full of spuds, lol!

I've been putting the compost in my compost bin, it's fairly low down still.  Is this OK?

Free potato for the best answer, answers on a post card lol!

You can add compost to your compost bin, but it seems quite a lot of work to get it in, then out again, when it's already composted

I'd simply put it straight onto the ground.

All this is assuming no pests and diseases.  If you had those, don't put them near the compost bin or ground.  Straight into the green wheelie bin!
