storing comfrey `juice`
« on: July 02, 2011, 22:00 »
At last, after following the one of the methods for getting comfrey leaf `juice`I think I have it sorted.I shall be making as much as I can whenever I can.I might not need to use it as I make it,so I might end up with litres of the black stuff.
Can I store it in my shed or down at the allotment where the smell won`t bother anyone ?How long can I store it,or will it start to go mouldy and unuseable....

I store my comfrey juice in 1 litre plastic bottles that come with my home brew wine kits, sorry |I cant tell you how long the juice will store for, but I have stored it for 6 months with no problems. Usually any thats left over at the end of the growing season goes on the compost heap which acts as an accelerator.
I used to work in a helium gas factory, but I walked out, no one talks to me like that.

Glad to hear that.

Given what it smells like normally, and that my comfrey tea often seems to have mould on top I am not sure I would know what it would have to be like to be unsuable. I think you could store it as long as you like - the only worry would be it freezing and bursting the container in the cold weather- it would then be fairly unpleasant to come back to once it thawed.

Saw on Fridays Gardeners world that you can use the comfrey leaves as a mulch which then rots down into the soil without the stink.  Monty Don was putting the leaves at the base of tomato plants.  Thought this info might be of interest incase you all missed the program.   :)

I saw that episode too.

I thought, OK, I actually know a bit about Comfrey so lets see what he says.

Disapointed (again) - he went on about it self seeding all over the place but didn't mention Bocking 14 - the sterile type. Why on earth miss this out - surely he knows about it? Second, he only mentioned the smelly process for making comfrey juice  - what about the much less smelly 'press' method?

Then later, he 'dug up' some potatoes. This looked decidedly fishy. Nice big spuds, curiously not connected to a potato plant and no mention of the variety. That's right Monty, don't bother telling us that, who cares - it's only potatoes.

Sorry to sound bitter but Gardeners World is way out of date - the amount of time devoted to growing things to eat is pathetic.

Oh and that idea about using comfrey leaves as a mulsh? Fine, but I remember someone on this site recommending that method to attract slugs and snails to a particular spot away from plants that you don't want attacked. So the last think I would want to do is to set up a comfy comfrey village all around my tom plants.

Thanks for that info John, didn't know most of that.

Think I have one of the Bocking 14 varieties as it does not seem to spread with runners either.  Unfortunately I also have another variety which I am struggling to eradicate from my borders.  :(
