Overwintering Peas
« on: July 07, 2011, 07:38 »
Hi!

We live in S.W. France & have always successfully grown autumn planted broad beans. This summer, due the excessive heat, our usually successful peas have not had a chance to grow & produce.

On a new packet  bought for a very late sowing, we noticed that it is possible to over-winter this variety. Has anyone tried it? Might it work?  We usually get nighttime temperatures down to about -10C during the winter.

Thanks, Carol.

Peas do prefer cooler weather and it's more relevant to what part of France you live in. I'm sure fall planted peas would do well but whether or not they'd winter over is something you'll have to test. My guess is that some sort of winter cloche would protect them from the deeper cold of mid winter.
