ONIONS
« on: July 06, 2011, 15:28 »
Hi, im growing red baron onions from sets and its my first time, im sure they are meant to have grown more bushy than they are, they have also developed a long stalk and bulb at the end which i assume is a seed pod? has the rough wind last month caused them to bolt? Am i wasting my time waiting for them to grow any bigger in this case?
Many thanks
Pete

yep they have bolted. not just the wind. the watering, dry season, added that it is red cues all to bolting.
they dont store at all.
clip off the flower head and start pulling whenever you need it.  :)

Most of my onions (white) bolted on me last year. Don't be disheartened, they are still perfectly usable they just won't store well.

I lifted all of mine in one go (cant remember if i bothered to dry them a bit) and had a massive onion chopping session, then put them in little plastic bags in about  a one onion portion and froze them.

They were brilliant, whenever a recipe called for a chopped onion i had one already done, never bothered to defrost them.  When they ran out, for a while afterwards, i thought having to chop an onion was a real time consuming job!!
