Parasol plant - flowering?...
« on: May 31, 2011, 19:42 »
We have a 6'0" Parasol plant (Heptapleurum) in our conservatory, which has gone on for quite a few years now. I repotted it a couple of years ago, and it comes and goes with vitality - sometimes looking good, other itmes a bit sparse.

Do these ever flower, because on the top, there is a new growth which looks like a tiny grey/white Christmas tree, with several short branches coming from a stem about 6" long!

I thought they didn't have flowers, but there again, someone may know otherwise...

well that is a surprise I've grown these for years and never had a flower, but according to
Wiki
Quote
Schefflera arboricola (syn. Heptapleurum arboricolum) is a flowering plant in the family Araliaceae, native to Taiwan. It also goes by the common name "Dwarf Umbrella Tree."

(My Italics)

Please post a pic if it does flower  :)

Google images shows these for flowers

Many thanks MoS!

Here's a pic of it, taken this morning, so I'll keep an eye on it, (well, it's taller than me, so I'll have to stand on a chair...), and report back when - or if - anything happens!

As you're an expert here, I hope it is the same plant we're talking about...?

MoS - I've just clicked on your link, and think you're right!

Many thanks, but I'll still get a pic of it in bloom - especially for you! ;0)

Thanks for posting the picture - it's answered a question for me!

I inherited one of these from a friend who was moving abroad. When she gave me the beast it was about 6ft high and had a couple of thin stems. Rather ugly, I thought.  I went for it with my secateurs and chopped it back to about 18" Now I have a fab plant -  it regrows every year and I re-chop, feed and water. It is now about 4" high but is at least 6" wide. It's like a bush - Fits perfectly in a corner of my terrace. It never comes indoors - just chuck a winter fleece on it in winter and chop off any dead in spring. Perhaps I'll let it grow and see if I'm lucky enough to get a flower too!

Mum-O-S mentioned she'd like to see a picture of the flower a month on...

Here it is, and we've been staring at it for some time expecting a shower of petals and fragrant blooms, until we realised that this was it!

Hope for some berries later though...

Thanks Yorkie and MOS!

We're a bit dismayed, as we hoped for a huge display, but it seems that's it - until the berries come...

Still, it's nice to see it doing something at last!
