Onions
« on: June 27, 2011, 13:14 »
Hi All

As my intro post shows I'm a newbie to allotmenting and I will have many things to ask/pester you all with.

About 2 weeks ago I planted some onion sets (around 40) and in the last week they have pretty much all shot up. They are now around 3-4 inches in height. What I want to know is have I left it too late for these 2 grow properly? Half are red baron and not sure what the other half are. I thought it might be too late to plant them but I  wanted to see if anything would grow as the plot is new and was in a right state when I got it.

Cheers

Jimbo

Usually onion sets are planted anout March/April time, so I am not sure how big the bulbs will get

On the other hand, they wouldn't bulb up at all in the packet

I was late last year with mine, planted them in June, but not quite this late.

Only made about spring onion size.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

The chances are they won't do very much at all - probably no bigger than the sets you planted as they need a long season to bulk up.

Having said that, you can always pickle them when they are ready  ;)

Mine weren't even big enough for pickles.

So based on your replies should I be happy that they have actually started to grow as this would indicate that the ground is at least fertile? Or am I clutching at straws?

Told you I'm a total noob!!!

Don't worry Jimbo, you will still be able to use them at spring onion size. They will be great for meals like stir fries and fajitas.

Be glad their growing and appreciate the harvest you will get, as you'll have grown it yourself  :D :D

Taste all the sweeter  :D

I didn't realise until I got my plot just what it all involves. Have to say I'm really enjoying it though.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Cheers

Jimbo, have a look at "Kitchen Garden" magazine,  lots of articles and a what to do this month guide.  Sadly lots of adverts, but some may be useful.

Not too late to bang in a few runner bean seeds in small pots to be planted up later.   Cheers,   Tony.             Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Jimbo, have a look at this page on this site.

http://www.allotment-garden.org/garden_month.php

Lots of articles and a what to do this month guide.  Doesn't cost an extra penny.
