bolting japanese onions
« on: June 26, 2011, 19:17 »
I notice some folk have had poor crops of autumn onions.  ???

I have harvested 25.5 kg of onions from a raised bed 1.2m by 2.4m, which is great  :D :D and lots are huge.

BUT almost every one has bolted

Anyone got any ideas as to why, please?

Too dry.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Is that the only reason?

They are huge onions
At what stage did they need more water, please?

My memory is hazy!

But from the start of April onwards, wasn't there a lack of rain generally? This is when the winter planted onions have just woken up and need their moisture for the sprint to maturity, just like wot the spring planted ones are doing now the days are shortening.

Hmmmm. I see what you mean, DD

I did water them every week with a goodly soak --may be not enough though
