When I first grew them I looked at how to do it on a youtube video.  It's amazing what's on there.

If they're only starting to get big enough, then they're not mature and unsuitable for drying and storage.

Wait until the foliage flops over & starts to yellow.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

The onions I did from seed this year look big and healthy enough, but when I had a rootle today they still look like fat spring onions, no sign of bulbing up. Are they a lost cause? Don't think it's environmental because they're in the same bed with my garlic, which have all bulbed up beautifully.

Spring sown onions grow leaves up until the middle of the year and it is the shortening of day length which makes them bulb up. (I don't mean spring onions of course  ;) , just not to confuse with autumn sown sets)

Oh, that's a relief. Would be really annoying to have wasted so much bed space for so long and not get any return from it. The jury's still out on the broad beans though. That's a lot of space for a couple of meals worth of beans. I never seem to be very good at having anything cropping between autumn and summer (i.e. three quarters of the year :)), so I thought I'd try them.
