Chilli plant a bit tall and spindley?
« on: June 22, 2011, 09:24 »
I've got 3 cayenne pepper plants going on my windowsill this year (first time chilli grower!). When I bought the 3 seedlings, two were quite small, but one was a bit lanky even when it was only 6 inches tall.

Over the past month or so, the tall one has shot up to around 50cm tall, and in the last week has even set a couple of peppers which are growing nicely. I pinched out any growth near the top a couple of weeks back, and even though there are little signs of new growth along the stem, the tiny leaves don't seem to be growing. I gave the plant a Tomorite feed last night, so hopefully that will help, but any other ideas?

The other plants are what I'd call normal (one on the left in the photo), more like 30cm tall at the moment, but reasonably bushy for their age.

That could be my window js. I also have 3 types growing, one is lemon drop and has also become very leggy. The only thing I can suggest is to rotate positions because it might be that the frame is cutting down on the light that the plant in the bio pot is getting, causing it to become more leggy.

Well the pot is now at work, where it should get a bit more light.

Also should I keep the two chillis on the plant? Would there be any benefit in snipping them off? Seems like a shame, but if it'll help the plant to bush out then it might be worth it!

Last year one or two of mine only produced less then half a dozen chillis so I would leave them on and keep feeding the plant, I only water twice a week but give a weak feed most times with tomorite.

My lemon drop with just a few flowers so far, is next to my praire fire with dozens of little fruits growing on it. I think the type makes a big difference to the amount your going to get but as I have never grown cayenne chillis I cannot comment on what to expect. I imagine others will give more first hand info.

They look healthy enough so just carry on --- and don't cut off the chillies, as this won't be of benefit to the plant, and then you'll have none  ;)

I have ten plants growing in a large cold frame, all supposedly the same sort (cayenne interestingly) and two of them are open, leggy plants and the other eight short and bushy. All have flowers and chillies on them.

I had a couple of cayenne plants in the greenhouse last year, and both grew very tall.

I am not an expert but I have three plants growing on a sill, the one on my right like yours is growing taller than the rest. I put this down to the one on the right is getting the sun (apparantly it's summer) more than the other two.  I got over thirty chilli's last year so I am not moving them.
Won't be long till I start feeding with tom food.

Good luck with yours
