You can do it for most veg plants which start off from seed, although if the variety is F1 then you're unlikely to get exactly the same plant characteristics next year.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

At 10p a seed - £1.50 for a greenhouse full, I wouldn't even bother to risk it.
Your greenhouse too small or price is good?

I prefer to have my own seeds, by choosing them from best plants, which adopted well in my place. I know that i will loose some in weight and size, but they will be much more resistant to pests, so i can get bigger amount.

Some growers do deelop their own specific strains in this way Vit, but for most it is a lot of work for little saving.

I have let one parsnip run to seed this year (from last year's sowing of course  ;) ) as I want to see if really fresh seed germinates quicker.

I think you miss my point. Why go to the bother of saving seed that may result in tasteless pap, when it's only going to cost me £1.50 in reliable seed for each greenhouse?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

No, i didn't. Again - your greenhouse is small or price is good. Here if you want to buy seedlings of tomatoes, cheapest you can get is 58yen each, when season to plant almost finished. When it's proper time, 1 tomato seedling cost 128-158yen. Sorry, couldn't find package from tomato seeds, but it's something like 300+yen for 30(!!!)seeds with "85% fertility". Sad, but true

we can get tomato seeds at very reasonable prices here vit, so DD's point is very valid in the UK.

Plants are always a lot more expensive here as well!

300 yen is about £2.30 according to one calculator I just used, so the prices are comparable.

Perhaps it's a matter of perception about the relative cost of things.

Yeah, almost twice a price :) That's ok, next batch i'm going to get from diffrent supplier, who can provide bigger packages. Prices there much better, especially for leave veges.
