Rocket not looking healthy!
« on: June 20, 2011, 16:18 »
Hi all
I transferred some Rocket that I had grown from seed in a green house to my allotment but it all looks pretty sad and has some yellow spotty blotches on the leaves.

Does Rocket not take kindly to being transferred? or could it be my spoil type?

I could try growing straight from seed into my allotment rather than transferring...?!

Mike is right, and the reason is that rocket makes a whopping great long tap root

Give it time and it might well acclimatise. I've found it to be as tough as old boots :D

Mind you if you've been suffering from drought this year, they don't like to be dry, and I always have to sow rocket 2 or 3 times a year cos it runs to seed so quickly.

It would help to know where you are growing, so would you please click on your user name and put a location in your profile. Thank you.

Funny but mine has been OK

Last year's that overwintered, so maybe the long root helps it get through dry times better than on young plants :)

I am 'told' by my italian husband, that it is actually a weed ::), so i think it should settle down and give you some tasty leaves soon.  However, i always start mine off in peat pots and when they are about 1 inch high, transplant the pot straight into the soil.  I find this saves on space as i always have some ready to pick, some coming along nicely in a bed and another set propogating in the greenhouse.

just thought i would add this tip in case you want to try doing the same ;)

Thanks, I will see how it goes and may try sowing some from seed also.

For what it's worth, I have quite sticky clay based soil (when wet) if that helps at all...?!
