How long can I leave my leeks before transplanting them?

I had 2 disasters with my first sets of leeks and the final set are still very thin and small. How long can I leave them to grow or is there some food I can give them to boost their size?

When you say thin, do you mean Pencil thin?

They are about the thickness of medium egg noodles.
