Hens leg!
« on: September 09, 2007, 23:32 »
Can someone please put me out of my misery!!!! One of my chooks has the scales on one leg sticking out and not flush. Have I read or heard sometime ago that a squirt of WD40 would sort it!!! Not tried yet as don't want to give chook dermatitis! I can see no signs of infection or bugs under the scales. My local vet said she's ex- battery and over 2 1/2 years old, despatch and replace her??????? Obviously not a country vet, still cost me £14:50 for those words of wisdom! Regards Gary.

When the scale mites are all dead and gone the scales will remain lifted until the chook replaces them during a moult.

As ever you lot are a font of knowledge. Thanks for the tip on vasaline, glad I did not squirt her with WD40, mind you she would not have gone rusty.LOL. I'll take some vasaline when I need to go to the vets again!!! Thanks again folks. Regards Gary.

Chicken legs WD40

Hi, I agree - scaly legs.  They are hard to see, any oily substance does work as it suffocates the mites.  I have used RP7 same as WD40 but vaseline, olive oil, even spray on cooking oils will work well. Treat over 1 -2 weeks.
