Tried that once, they were okay until top got heavy and they unwound!  :(

You could have tied them up to stop them unwinding.

Oh hang on - that defeats the purpose.

Just wondering Vit, Why don't you want to tie them in?

I in the past have used canes, and tied with garden twine.
Last time i used plastic 25mm white electrical conduit and tied with garden twine, Disaster as the conduit is smooth the twine slipped due to the weight of the crop and snapped/kinked the stem at the bottom.
The plants ended up in a heap.
The toms did ripen but they only cropped what had already set.

This year i've got them on strings, no need to tie them in, i've never done this before so it's a first for me but know many many others that use this method, so hope they don't slip

I don't seem to have ready access to lady's tights these days ( ::)) so I use canes and polypropylene twine (loosely tied) to keep them on the straight and narrow.

I've found with bush types that the sheer weight of fruit can snap off the side stems which therefore also need additional support.
That would be an awful lot of tights, so I use the twine for that as well but sometimes cushion the stems with plant ties first.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

You'd be amazed at just how far one leg can go.  ;) The strips of tights are cut extremely thin, each stretches and makes at least two ties. Once cut and bundled together one pair of tights lasts all season and I have around 15 plants grown to 6' high.
