constant soft shelled eggs
« on: June 08, 2011, 11:29 »
One of my girls is laying soft shell/ no shell eggs. She has been doing it for a week now.
She has a wet looking bum too.

I have read on here that a bath is a good idea, but she is not used to be handled and I'm pregnant and have been advised not to touch the girls.

My other half is away in america for 2 weeks and I'm not sure what to do.

She also seems noisier than usual.

how old is she? Is she elderly or an ex batt?
If not then first of all cut out all treats and feed them just layers pellets/mash all day with access to crushed oyster shells available in a seperate pot all the time. Dark leafy greens help them absord calcium so you could try some broccoli or cabbage leaves hung up for them to peck at.
A dust bath will help her to clear up a mucky bum.
Staffies are softer than you think.

If you post which area you are in there may be another member close by who will be able to offer you a helping hand.   :)

Thanks for your help.

She is an ex batt, she seems to have cleaned herself up during the day.

I will get some broccolli and cabbage and see how that helps.

I live in Fareham, Hampshire

Can you get calcium tablets to give them?

I've got the same problem but only intermittently with one of my hybrids.
I've been giving her poultry spice (25% calcium on label) mixed with a bit of oats and water and that seems to help but it certainly hasn't cured the problem.
