Progress on new plot
« on: June 04, 2011, 09:50 »
I took on an a new plot about 2 weeks ago, which was very overgrown in weeds. The plot is in 2 halves seperated by a dilapidated greenhouse (in need of repair/relacement)........
I have succeeded in digging through the one part and getting some potatoes planted......... :)
But on closer inspection of the second half, which is still carpeted in weeds, I find that it appears to be something of a dumping ground, where god knows what has been deposited...............
I can see that it will take an awful lot of work to put back as it should be, so I think that it will be slow progress over the winter months.
What have I taken on................................

Hi there,

Its all good fun and nice to see it cleared when it is.

just be careful and wear thick gloves on the other half of your plot, in case there might broken glass or wood with nails sticking out.

Happy days :)

Seven or eight years on, we are still finding the occasional rusty nail / screw or hinge.    Good advice potatogrower.   Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

You can halve the battle by covering the weeded section with flattened cardboard boxes so that no spaces show, then cover the works with black plastic which you weight down. Leave until next year and most of the weeds should be long dead. The cardboard will have rotted down and you can then clean out debris - but use strong gloves as you don't want tetnus.

don't worry keep people who have had their plot sometime still say they find it hard to feel on top of it.

just keep going. the covering the bit you have not done yet is good advice - apart from containing the weeds what the eye does not see :)

Make sure you take piccies so you can look back on your progress when it feels as though you're fighting an ongoing battle.

If you make steady progress, and keep on top of the weeds on the rest of the area, you will be OK.  Whatever you do, don't let the weeds get away from you as a) you'll get a warning letter, and (more importantly) b) you won't feel able to face the plot and become completely disheartened.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Once you get on top of it, and you will in time, make sure to stay on top. It only needs 30 mins a couple of times a week at this time of year to go down and hoe out the new weed seedlings.

Its far easier than leaving it and having to start all over again.  ;)

Regards, WG
