french beans looking a bit sad
« on: June 01, 2011, 15:58 »
Hello,

I recently planted out my french beans, and 2 of them (out of 10) are romping away while the others are growing more slowly and looking a little bit yellow. It's the first time i've grown anything on this particular bit of garden and i haven't added anything to the soil, thought i'd just see how things went this year and take it from there.
I was wondering what sort of soil french beans like, what mysterious nutrient is there in the soil round the 2 happy ones which i could maybe give to the others to give them a boost.

Were having the same problems here too, May has been dreadfull, very windy and barely reaching 60F, the whole plot has come to a standstill, begining to wonder if this is going to be a waste and not very productive, I am thinking of digging up the sweetcorn and getting something which will produce something.

Has the soil had time to settle down?  I found with beans they need at least three months for the soil to settle before they are completly happy, however if you leave them they should perk up with the weather but may be well behind the others

Three months to settle?

I expect mine to have been well into production by then!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks for your replies.
It's possible i've damaged their roots a bit transplanting them, they were sticking out the sides of their paper pots.
On the plus side, we've just had a massive storm which has flattened my potatoes and killed at least one baby corn plant :( but will at least have settled the soil in nicely around the beans :).
