Tomatoes into bushes?
« on: May 30, 2011, 15:37 »
Today we bought some Tomatoes plants (50p bargins).... we don't have a greenhouse so we want to grow them outdoors ...we are a bit worried that its too windy on our plot! we wondered if there is a way to make any varitey of Tomatoes into bush plants to they are more stable against the wind.

If not does anyone have any simple (and cheap) ideas to create some kind of wind block!

Thanks

Tomatoes grow bushy naturally!  If you just let it alone it will form itself into a thick bush.  You may have to insert STRONG twiggy sticks to support the crop.

A windbreak acts better if the wind is allowed to filter through (as in a hurdle) and not a solid wall.   Have a go at hurdle making.    Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I've got a 4' X 8' bed crammed with 15 tomato plants (mostly bush but 3 were spare cordon plants). I did the same last year and I just put canes round the edge of the bed and tied strings between them, to prop the toms up and stop them falling outside the bed. Other than that, they pretty much supported each other and I didn't have anything snapping off.
