who's eating my stawberries?
« on: May 26, 2011, 20:09 »
My strawberries are just starting to ripen and the first few have been eaten by some hungry critter!

Now, I have had them netted under a tunnel frame to keep the birds off, so unless a small bird is getting underneath the netting, which is possible but not easy, it must be something else. I do have moles coming up in the patch, so would moles eat strawberries or could it be mice or something else?

Help I would like some for myself!

Didn't think of slugs, but they are on straw so thought that would stop them?

mmmm! I wonder if it is voles? How would I get rid of voles then, or stop them getting to the strawberries?

Probably mice. Do you find them carried off to covered or shaded areas? My strawberries are always attacked with mice. In fact I have just been out putting sheet metal around the raised bed to stop the devils getting in to eat them. Problem is they always go for the one you're looking forward to pick as it was just about to ripen :(

I too have my strawberries under netting, on straw so off the ground, however what ever is eating them doesn't take them away but enjoys them while still on the plant.
So far its 3 strawberries to us and half-a-dozen to the unknown ........ javascript:replaceText('%20:unsure:',%20document.forms.postmodify.message);

Woodlice?

Have a very close look at the nibbled ones - you might find the culprit inside if it's woodlice.  ::)

Thoroughly check your netting; smaller birds will squeeze through unfeasibly small gaps.
Sadly a female blackbird got tangled up in my strawberry bed netting and became an easy target.  :(

My strawberry bed was next to a bed that was covered with weed membrane. Got to the plot one day and there were 3 whole strawberry plants missing!! Couldnt find them anywhere!! (Thought a 2 legged rat had taken them!!))

Few days later, removed the weed membrane and found a mice or rats nest underneath made from my weed clippings, and, wait for it!!, three whole strawberry plants!!

Little beggers!! Think a cat must of had them though cos the bed looked like someone had played football on it!!!
Start at the beginning, and finish at the end!!
