overloaded plum tree
« on: May 26, 2011, 20:56 »
My brother has a plumb tree which is covered with tiny fruits. The branches are so heavily laden that some large branches have broken off leaving rough ends, and others are sagging alarmingly. He has done some thinning of the fruits, but there are so many of them. Is there anything else he can do?

A common problem with Victoria plums is their tendency to self destruct , apart from ruthless thinning all you can do is prop the branches.

Many fruit that overbear one year, tend not to bear much the next year while it recovers. So thinning is a better guarantee of harvest every year. Seems brutal to thin, but you have to be cruel to be kind.   ;)

Both of my plum trees seem fairly plastered too.

I was / am expecting there to be a natural fall of part of the crop sometime soon. Maybe I am wrong and this doesn't happen to plums?

I thought maybe the local pigeons and the wind might help do the job.
