... or scattered groups of things with the odd self sown foxglove or cranesbill to attract those random wild bees for pollination.

I keep within a strict five year rotation but otherwise the plants within the groups are clumped in groups rather than rank and file. Distances are optimum though so I get maximum yield.

Don't understand the question. Isn't a row just a column rotated through 90 degrees?

Orientation of rows depends on slope of land (furrows across slope to minimise erosion/run off), and position (west/east rows will get full sun on one side but not on the other and if tall shade out the row of crops on the north side), also shape of beds and access points.

We plant generally north to south in staggered rows, closer together than the seed packets suggest but with a wider gap between different veg.

Except for when we're running out of space, when things get shoved in wherever they'll fit. Sort of.

I think it would work for some veg (cost versus return), it certainly works for soft fruit when grown in columns. I posted this photo on another thread, but eight plants in the space of one gives you an idea of what is possible. I intend to expand this experiment next year by erecting a row.

I have 4' wide beds that run North-South, and I plant in blocks within the bed!
