Buying eggs to hatch
« on: May 23, 2011, 10:20 »
I have a broody hen who is broody for about 4 wks then has a couple of weeks off befoe she is broody again so have been thinking of getting some fertile eggsfor her to hatch. I would like to try Cream Legbars but can't find any local to me (west Norfolk) Are there any places I should avoid ordering thom from? Apologies if this is not a question that can be answered on the forum.

I get eggs from Ebay in the main, but like all eggs sent via the post, hatching results vary. I've had all my eggs hatch and no eggs hatch, it depends on how roughly they've been handled in the postal system. I know some on here have experienced problems with Ebay sellers - eggs not being for the breed ordered etc, but I haven't had any of that sort of problem so far and I always check the feedback out before I buy, especially if follow up feedback has been left on hatching rates. If you can try and pick the eggs up - you can filter results on Ebay to show the nearest seller to you.
The only other solution is to contact your local poultry club or visit a country show as there should be plenty on now and see if hatching eggs are being sold by the poultry dealers. I visited the Royal Welsh Smallholder festival on the weekend and brought Gold Brahma, Welsumer and RIR eggs home with me. Worst thing I did was buy a 24 egg incy!

they have day old Cream legbar chicks so you could try messaging them and asking if they would sell any of their eggs?
