Bumble Foot ???
« on: May 16, 2011, 19:56 »
Hi, my Wilma (2 yrs old)  has an inflamed toe, if thats what it is called or is it claw.  I have soaked her feet in warm water with tea tree oil and lavender oil and also rubbed this into her toe.  There is a small mark which looks as if it might have been punctured.  Any ideas anyone has would be appreciated.

If it is bumble foot I have read that the chicken needs antibiotics but we don't have an avian vet near us, how can I find one if I need one.  Any comments please.  She seems to get everything going.
Thanks
Pammie

whereabouts are you?
My vet isn't a chook specialist but has been pretty good so far and doesn't charge the earth (£15 per visit ish - she charges small pet rate).
I think bumblefoot can be started by a puncture wound becoming infected but is usually on the underside of the foot in the soft pad and looks like a dark ball, rather than on a toe/claw.
I would do just what you've done and perhaps use an antiseptic spray/ointment for good measure and see how it goes.

I agree with the advice so far - try to keep the wound clean and use whatever local antiseptic creams you have available.

Also keep a close eye on her for the infection spreading.  If the redness or hotness starts to move up her leg, or if she shows other symptoms of a wider infection, you may need to get antibiotics for her.

Thanks, for your advice.    Her toe is still a bit hot but not quite so swollen looking, will carry on with treatment.   I am glad it is not bumble foot.  I did ask the local vets if they dealt with chooks but they don't.  I live in East Sussex near Haywards Heath.
