lime green whites?????
« on: May 15, 2011, 10:08 »
Ok I have a broody and the others wont lay with her rosey in the coop. They have taken to hiding their eggs around the garden.

However they kept evading us?  Finally we found a clutch of 20+ which with my lot is only probably about a week old.

However, to cut a long story short at least 4 of the eggs smelt ok and the yolks looked ok but the whites were a lime green colour and slightly watery. The eggs were found in amongst a low growing conifer thing, so no grass stain.
Any ideas and could I have used them to cook with?

Some weeds can turn egg contents green, but without knowing exactly what may have caused it I'd personally errr on the side of caution and not eat them.

take a look at this website:-

http://www.bfhd.wa.gov/edu/eggucation.php

it explains that they have a possible spoilage with a bacteria and to avoid eating them  :(

It would be a good idea to move the broody into her own coop. She is probably not letting the others into lay! Good luck

She got put in a cat basket almost as soon as i get up until lunchtime. but i did not realise she was being broody for about 4 days by then the others had decided to lay elsewhere lol

She has now stopped so I am keeping my fingers crossed they will start to lay in the coop again
