What would you do
« on: May 14, 2011, 13:37 »
hiya guys

im having abit of a moral dilemma

The plot I have use to belong to to the guy next to me as he had 3 plots next to each other and the council took one off to offer up to folk on the rather long waiting list

now at one end there are 6 plum trees planted 2 deep and three wide which takes up a good 7 or so metres and shades another 2/3.

now I have no interest in plums as a fruit ....

now if truth be told I would have taken them down and pulled the roots if it wasnt for my neighbour as he seemed rather passionate about them

I have thought of transplanting them but they are rather established or even taking half them down and use the fruit from the others to swap with other holders for apples etc

i really dont know what to do as they taking up a sizable chunk of my plot but I dont want the guilty conscience of hacking them down

i want to get something set in plan soon as I am planning where everything is going so wanted to get some general advice really

thanks

It's your plot now - have them down!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I would imagine that he chose to give that one up, I can't see them not giving him a choice.  As DD says, it's yours to do with as you like so take them out.

Why not offer him the half plot with the plums in for half of his plot next to your one.

Don't feel guilty, it's your plot now. If you don't eat plums there really is no point in having plum trees. They are taking up a fair sized chunk of your plot including all the shaded area. Try offering them to him by all means but don't feel bad for wanting to grow things on your plot you actually want to eat!

I agree with everyone! It IS your plot now.
small, Welsh and almost certainly bonkers, but can be tamed with Talisker, if required

I think if your neighbour had really wanted the trees he would have moved them onto a plot he was keeping before giving the bit that is now yours back to the council.

Does your site have a noticeboard? You could put up a notice asking if anyone else wants to come and get them. They would get free trees and you save yourself some work. Win win  :D

If they are well established, you'll have considerable difficulty in moving them at totally the wrong time of year.

I think I would ask him if he wants to move them to his plots, if not, offer them to the others, why not leave the 3 nearest the end of the plot for now, they may be a windbreak?  and also as you thought, may be good for swapsies, that would give you extra land to start with, rather than trying to do too much at once.

Best time to try to move them would ideally be when they are dormant - i.e. over winter period
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
