Hi guys, Ive just been given an old greenhouse (which is fantastic :-) ) but the base has seen better days ! does anyone have any ideas on how to protect it from further rust etc ? I was thinking hammerite but does anyone know if it will leech out into the soil and contaminate it ??

get your self a cone shaped wire brush on a drill .do a good job of removing as much as possible then if you have  blow torch  heat the metal up for a few mins to remove any oxidisation still going on,, then hammer it with a couple coats .leave 24 hours to dry before second coat ;)werked fer me

Hammerite! The best stuff there is for those really hard jobs!It will do everything Muntjac says!

We were advised to paint our very old Rayburn with it, after the chips in the enamel became just too dirty to contemplate any more!

It worked a treat, and the rejuvenated Rayburn lasted for several years as a lovely dark green model, much loved by the glossy pages in the expensive 'style' mags, but better still, the much loved Growster family...
