One small poly tunnel, what to do?
« on: May 09, 2011, 15:16 »
Hello all
this is my first post about my first allotment.

I'm in my second year after some good and some bad results so I'm living and learning!

Most of my veg is currently in my neighbours greenhouse, maturing to a good established size before I put them in.

This all worked well last year without any problem so I'm happy to continue with that method but I was recently given (as a gift) a small poly tunnel (3m long by about 50cm high).

So my question is, if there is one thing that would benefit from being protected by my poly tunnel (whether from seed of plant) what would it be?

Many thanks!
Rob

Sounds like one I've just put up over my outdoor toms. You can also use it for sweet peppers, cukes, melons, etc until the weather is warm enough for the tunnel to be taken off. I can't think of anything that's short enough to benefit long term from this size of tunnel.

I like to use mine for shorterm protection of anything i'm planting out.

So from greenhouse to cold frame, to planted in a raised bed with the polytunnel over it until the next lot of anything is getting planted out and i move it onto them.

Thanks, so essentially it should be used as temporary protection on new/young plants until the weather is warmer and the plants are well established?

I was considering putting mine over my strawberries.

I was considering putting mine over my strawberries.

You could do but you must provide good access for bees to pollinate the flowers or you will get no fruit (which would presumably then let birds in to eat them all before you do!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
