Pea support netting
« on: May 07, 2011, 21:23 »
Is there any difference between the netting sold as pea/bean support netting and the stuff sold as general purpose garden netting? The general purpose stuff seems cheaper, so is there any particular advantage in getting the pea/bean stuff?

Netting is pretty much netting. I used to always use it for peas but found I was constantly having to reattach them to the netting. This year I'm going back to DD's method of posts on either side of the row, all along the length, then running twine at various levels. It basically fences in the peas, which saves loads of time as the silly tendrils don't want to fasten onto netting by themselves most of the time  >:(

Yes, I was going to use twine to bind the peas to the netting, but I still need netting to support them because I'm growing Alderman, which are tall.

I've made a row of crossed canes for stability, as you do for runners, but with fewer canes. then up the middle I have stiff netting anchored down  between the 2 rows of canes.
The single row of beans will have the netting one side and the outer side will have twine tied across as the beans grow.

The other side (where the 2nd row of canes are) will have dwarf beans planted soon, so as not to waste any space at ground level.

I use the large mesh-sized "pea and bean netting" (how I hate trying to untangle and straighten that stuff!! ) supported and tied to canes threaded through it.

To keep the pigeons off until the peas are of a decent size I use 2' high plastic trellis netting wired together and stood upright to surround the support canes (but a few inches away to avoid giving the peas the wrong idea!)

This works for me because everthing has to be done on quite a small scale but wouldn't be practical on an allotment-sized plot.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
