Frosty potatoes
« on: April 30, 2011, 02:56 »
I've found my earlies have been caught out by a late frost. Is it terminal?

You haven't put your location in your profile Redgoat but in many parts of the UK night frosts are not at all unusual at the end of April, despite most of the month having been sunny and warm.

They should recover but will have been knocked back in proportion to the amount of damage they have sustained.

The top growth must be covered, preferable by earthing up but with anything to hand if frost threatens!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Last year we had some sharp frosts in May down to -4 and some of my tatties got burned but there was no serious harm done. If a few leaf tips get frosted I wouldn't worry.

I'd still aim to have them covered if you can. No frost damage is better than even just a little. Grass-mowings thrown on top work well.  ;)
