Alicante tomatoes: Greenhouse or outside?
« on: April 29, 2011, 16:51 »
Hello Allotmenters.  :)

One question: is Alicante tomatoes to be grown in the greenhouse or outside or both?

Being a fan of the Expert book series, Dr D.G. says in The Vegetable & Herb Expert  that it is a greenhouse grown tomato, but on the back of the seed packet it says it can be grown outside.  Can it?

I'd appreciate if anyone could help here.

Many thanks.

 :)

Years ago when I used to grow it, any that wouldn't fit in the greenhouse were planted outside. They ripened less fruit than those inside, as it was cooler, but did ok  :)

I find that some of the modern varieties have a better flavour, so don't grow it any more.
See what you think  ;)

I have grown Alicante outside over a few years now. I find it to be quite hardy and very prolific.

Hello and many thanks mumofstig and Third Lanark  :)

I still have Gardeners Delight tomato seeds from the BBC Dig In campaign from two years ago, which is a favourite and a definite outside one from the The Vegetable & Herb Expert book, so I might grow them instead.

Many thanks.  :)

I stuck some surplus alicante plants outside last year but they didn't produce much. Three or four trusses of green toms which made chutney. Mind you, they didn't go out ill the end of June so it was probably a bit late.

I tried Alicante last year (and Shirley) - didn't like them. They grew OK outside against my south facing back wall - I just didn't find them tasty enough.

I have found Alicante to grow well in the greenhouse and produce a good, tasty crop.  Given the option I think you will get better results inside.
