Rye would suit my requirements for a green manure. Strikes me that I'm considering planting a variety of grass, which could become a weed. My guess is that even if dug in it will overwinter and could add to my weeding woes in future years, so I'd be better off with something else.

Anybody have any experience of grazing rye as a green manure, and are there any downsides of using it?

I planted some in late autumn.  Having been fairly well-behaved over winter, it started growing quite quickly in February so I dug it in.  It wasn't too bad if I weeded it out first, left it on the surface to die a bit before turning it in - but some of it did resprout.  Others have said that it's a bit difficult to dig in if still growing and I did find that a bit.

I must have been lucky as I grew an overwinter combo of Rye grass and Vetch and had little problems. I didn't cut it first, I just turned it over. It all rotted in no problem except for a bit around the edges (near my fence). I just pulled that by hand and all is fine now. I found it rotted in very quickly.
