best way to tie plants to supports
« on: April 28, 2011, 19:31 »
Hi Guys,

Hope you are all well and every thing is now coming up.

Well my cukes, toims and peppers are doing well, so please can you tell me the best method of tying them to supports to not damage them and get the best yield.

Many thanks as always

Jools

There are so many things you can tie veg with. I personally use nylon baling twine as it's very cheap and I can use lots. I've used jute string in the past but find it rots too quickly (like in late summer just as toms are ripening  >:() so I'll stick with nylon.  Strips of old tights are also great, same with the new foam-type ties but they get a bit pricey. You can also buy plant clips, but again, you'll find you need lots.

I advise against the wire type ties as they'll cut into stems as plants get heavier and want to lean.

I use the cheap bright green nylon twine they sell in Wilkinsons and the Poundshop :)
and twist it around the cane, crossover and then around the stem and knot. ( a bit like a figure 8 )
I tie under every side shoot on tomatoes, and about the same distance on cukes.

Peppers get bushy so I usually have 3 canes spread around the outside of them, and just tie the twine frome cane to cane in circles.

I hope that makes sense  :D

I do a clove hitch knot round the cane at the height I want, then tie the string into a regular knot the other side of the plant stem, allowing sufficient length for the stem to expand.  The first knot makes sure that the string doesn't slip down the cane in the early stages.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
