Shoots coming up from my Gooseberry
« on: April 29, 2011, 23:24 »
I've noticed that my Gooseberry (winhams industry) is producing two shoots from the ground, about 4" out from the main stem. Is this normal? It has been in the ground since last spring and this is it's first proper fruiting season (the bush has loads of tiny fruit now and a few remaining flowers).

I thought it would stay as a single stemmed bush - the stem is about 3/4" diameter and about 6" tall and the bush is a nice bowl shape.

Should I just let it do it's own thing, or cut out the shoots to retain its current, single stemmed, shape? (Come to think of it, if you want to grow a cordon, you would have to cut out any ground shoots - right?)

It's advisable to cut them right out as they take nutrients from the main plant.
