Spud, you haven't annoyed anyone! Ask three gardeners and you will get (at least) four opinions.


I'm not 100% about deep beds because they seem a lot of work to build and to dry out quickly in these drought days but there is a lot of positives to say about them as well

As for leaving stuff on the ground, I'd have some concern about providing a resevoir for pests and disease but I see what you're saying.

Don't worry spud I'm also a convert to fixed beds although mine are probably much more weedier than yours by the sound of it (see pics in personal gallery thingy).  I'm happy to let the worms do the work and only dig to harvest potatoes and other root crops, the rest of the time the fork is in the shed.  My resolutions for next year are a lorry load of manure and mulch mulch and mulch again!
