No flowers on climbing beans
« on: July 28, 2011, 17:10 »
Can't work out why I've not got flowers on my french climbers yet. Been 'topping' them for the last month. Well watered. Used FBB meal on sowing. No additional fertilisers. Plants well spaced and healthy. Did 'trench' them which isn't strictly necessary with these. Two varieties so can't blame the seed company.

Neighbour's beans in full bloom :-(

Will give them more time, but anyone else experiencing similar?

I've got a purple podded bean that's flowering away but the ordinary green ones look very sad.

They're French...need I say more  ::)  :lol:

How odd.  I have no such problems and am very close to you so that rules out the weather too.

Mine are covered in flowers (more then usual) and have been picking for over a week now.  The whole frame hums with the sheer number of bumble bees that are always around them.  Lovely to see.

I hope yours pick up soon, and would be interested to hear if you pin point the problem.

I have white flowering climbing french beans on the same canes as my runners.

All planted on the same date, all planted out on the same date.

Runners are giving us samll pickings but plenty of littles ones set

Frenchies only just beginning to flower.

So, sorry ---- no idea why this has happened for you Swing Swang, any more than I know why mine are as they are

I'm in the same boat. Both runners and climbing French going slow but looking v healthy and big. But only runners are flowering. In exact same conditions and bed. Weird. Here's hoping for a wRm September or will be the shortest bean season ever!

Some other weird things making me think must be past or present weather (courgettes taking a long time to grow, Tom flowers taking ages to set).

I find all the beans really like heat to make the bean pods grow well. I and I think with setting flowers as well. Before I went on vacation last week, I picked all my beans and there were very few flowers left. When I got back a week later, the plants were sagging with mature beans. I was gobsmacked to say the least.

Swing Swang, I wonder if your 'topping' is affecting production somehow. I've never heard of anyone doing this at mature size.

swing swang I'm in the unhappy bean club too.
My french beans/borlotti beans just don't seem to have wanted to do anything!
The runners are starting to move and broad beans were great but the others sulked I can only think it it is the cold spell we had may/june. I don't think they like cold winds (nor me!)

Cheers HH
Keep digging
