red berry toms still cropping after 3 months.
« on: September 15, 2007, 23:01 »
Hi my red berry toms have been a real success this year when everything else has been rather poor.  Started with ripe toms late June and are still producing sweet little toms. In fact they are still flowering & setting fruit, the trusses just keep growing & growing.

Also just taken off a good crop of Roma - brill all ripened together - made into a rather nice tom sauce & frozen.

Black Russian now finnished - a lovely tom in mediteranean salads.

Pink Brandywine - dodo crop of beautiful toms (texture & taste georgous) - will try next year & hope they do better.

Ailsa craig - tasteless

Gardeners delight - good late crop, used mostly for tom sauce.

Yellow Pigmy - suffered with wind (given gaviscon), no seriously in hanging baskets thus exposed to a lot of unseasonal wind - also affected were cougettes & numex twighlight chillis in hanging baskets.

Re gardeners delight, this is the first year I `ve tried them (free seeds)and I have loads but can anyone tell me why the fruits are so variable in size with most being very small(marble size). This is the first time I will have no tom.sauce in the freezer!

they are a charry variety, but should be larger than marble. Did you pinch out the sideshoots? as too many branches would lead to smaller sized toms.

I thought cherry too and good for tomsauce but they are miniscule..not too many branches although I understood that you could leave them to grow as bush type, had some outside along with the larger fruit types but all got blighted.

My gardeners del' are about 1.5" diameter, sideshoots pinched out early on but then a bit neglected, seemed to limit themselves to between 4 - 6 trusses.  Another good tom plant where trusses seemed to ripen together, instead of a few ripe toms here & there.

My toms didn't do too well this year but better than last when they didn't ripen at all.  This year they got blight but a few were edible but certainly not cherry sized, they were more a small normal size.  But hopefully will have better luck next year if I keep them in the greenhouse (differnt variety though)
