New Rhubarb Roots
« on: April 10, 2011, 09:46 »
I have some rhubarb roots   that are 3-4 years old. The stems and leaves are much courser than my older rhubarb and these new roots produce a lot of shoots each year. Should I pull them out and find other roots or is there something I can do to improve them?

I suspect it's just a different variety, PS.

If that's the case, I doubt you'll find much to 'improve' it.

Thanks, think I will look for some new roots as the rhubarb never reddens much either

If you have the space to keep them for another year I would recommend that you simply stoke them up this year (while getting other varieties going for the future) and use what you can.   Good old wallop of rotted good stuff in the autumn.

Then in January tip a plastic dustbin or similar over them and force them.  Make sure they don't dry out completely but make very sure all the light is properly excluded.

Come the back end of next March (or early April? depends on your local microclimate up there) you should find that the forced sticks are beautifully pink, smooth, sweet and tender - even if right now the only stalks produced are as green as the incredible Hulk's bogies and as rough as a warthog's third best jeans.....

Beautiful stuff at the time when supermarkets charge silly money for just a few sticks and from what sounds like quite a vigorous crown you should get quite a haul.  Gorgeous in the usual pies and crumbles etc - and utterly wonderful in Friands!
The Dales - probably fingerprint marks where God's hand touched the world
